Ujamaa: How I Boosted My Credit Score By 130 Points In 6 Months

Do you remember the podcast we did with Kenney Conwell? If you missed it, listen to it here after you read this article!

During that interview, Kenney taught you how to start your credit repair journey. I had a few issues on my credit, so I took advantage of the advice he gave me. Here are the results.

You are looking at a legit screenshot from my credit analysis over the course of 6 months. I had already made some gains, but Kenney’s advice took me to the next level (52 points in one month alone)! Here are the top 3 ways that I put Kenney’s advice to use

Understand The Game

The biggest thing that I learned about credit scores is this: its not about paying off bills. Its about putting your money in the right place.

Most people think that closing credit cards that they are not using or paying off collections accounts are good ideas. Wrong.

Your credit score is a combination of 6 factors. Here is how they break down:

  • 35% Payment History
  • 30% Credit Utilization
  • 15% Credit Age
  • 10% Account Types
  • 10% Credit Inquiries

Based on the chart above, what we see is…

  • 35% of your score is your payment history
  • 30% of your score is credit utilization
  • 15% of your score is how long you have had your credit
  • 10% of your score are the types of accounts you have open, and
  • 10% of your score are credit inquiries.

So your payment history weighs as much on your credit as the bottom 3 factors combined. If you pay your bills on time and don’t carry big balances, you’re two-thirds of the way toward a better credit score.

Of course, if it was that simple, everybody wold have an 800. Every situation is different, and I am not a credit expert. I am not certified by any organization to give you any kind of financial advice. But my credit was probably much worse than yours is now when I got started. Today I have the highest score of my life.

I Boosted My Available Credit With Secured Cards

The second biggest factor that impacts your credit score is your utilization. That means how much of your available credit you are using. If you have $10,000 in credit card limits and you have charged $5,000 to your card, you are using 50% of your credit.

I didnt have enough to pay off my credit cards, so I started paying them down every month. This made my credit history look good. But here is how I “gamed” the system – I boosted the amount of credit I had. Here is how:

I couldnt open a bank account (I told you my credit was bad!) so I had to use a pre-paid debit card that had a routing and account number. Netspend is a reloadable card with a real bank behind it, so I got what I needed.

Now that I had a “checking account”, I got three secured credit cards.  I loaded these cards up with $200 each, and that boosted my available credit immediately. You can add however much you need based on your situation. Use Credit Aroma to get the best deal on a secured credit card.

I Used A Credit Repair Service To Remove Late Payments and Collections Accounts

The fastest way to boost your credit score is by getting those collections, late payments, and bad marks off of your credit report. I didn’t even know that it was possible to get these items erased, but professionals do it all the time.

Some websites will tell you that this is something you can do on your own. While that is true, I would not suggest it.  Leave credit repair to the pros just like you leave auto repair to the mechanics.

Instead of trying to figure out how remove items on my own, I used Credit Sesame. They got rid of my bad payment history and one out of three of my collections accounts. That alone made my credit score jump almost 70 points!

I Got A Loan And Paid It Right Back

I had a score of 590 when I started rebuilding my credit, so getting a conventional loan was not going to happen. But I needed to diversify my accounts and fatten up my available credit. I was able to get a bad credit loan online but because of the high interest rate I immediately paid half the loan back off with the money I got. I used the rest to increase the credit limit on my secured cards.

Thats it! No magic. No scams. No selling plasma. While there are still some items on my credit report that I am not happy about, having a 700+ credit score gives me access to more credit at cheaper costs than I need. And I was able to start investing in real estate sooner than I thought I could!

I Tracked My Results And Stayed Accountable

One of the missing steps here is tracking your results. I woke up almost every day and tracked my progress. There is a saying in business – “what gets measured gets managed”. By measuring your credit score, your secured credit cards, and your other accounts, you can gain control over the process.

Accountability helps this process more than you can imagine, too. Thats why I launched the UBA Credit Score Challenge. Click here to see the details. Being a part of an accountability challenge is one of the best ways to stay on track and achieve your goals. So join the group, measure your progress, and take control of your financial health!
